Definitely an interesting option. I keep hearing Sam Darnold's name thrown around too. Curious to hear your thoughts on him as well. Is he just in a bad situation with the Jets?

He’s certainly on the list of QBs to watch/write about, but haven’t gotten to him yet. Perhaps next week.

Great piece Mark. Like I’ve been saying Mariota is a viable option

Thank you Felix! The more I watched the more I liked. There’s definitely a skillset there to work with and I think it can fit a lot of the things Scott Turner liked to do.

Thank you for writing this article. I think Mariota would be excellent choice. I see him, ironically, making a Ryan Tannehill type of comeback if he gets a second bite at the starting QB apple. We know that Ron values a mobile QB. I also read an article from Vegas that Gruden wanted to move Marcus because of his $10M contract (pricey for a backup) and use those $$ to invest in his defense. Getting a formal 2nd overall pick for a day two draft pic would be a win in my book.

I certainly think the skillset is there to be intriguing. I don't know if he'd have a Tannehill-esc comeback, but the skillset is there if he can put it altogether on a consistent basis.

Good to see you working again..Long time follower and admirer of your work...So here is the question..Why would Gruden who is a collector and admirer of Qb's sour on both Carr and Mariota to the extent the he appears willing to move on from both of them? And if he feels he cant win consistently with them, why should we believe we can do any better? Mariota especially intrigues me because he was a very high selection..Not that it means anything in the end.. Why would 2 teams now dump him? The Titans doing so to go with another re tread in Tannihill?? It costs so much time and effort to develop any qb, what leads teams to decide it just wont work out?.. All the best to you, Shally

Now a Mariotta I can fully get behind and would prefer a million times over as opposed to trading for Darnold or anyone else not named Carr. My preference is a 4th rounder but I know how the game works and the capital is almost always higher than I’d like when talking premium positions So I’d swallow the pill of a 3rd rounder but that’s absolutely as high as I’d go. He’d easily be the best quarterback on our roster and once we’ve added some Upgraded offensive players I believe he could lead a Very effective offense for us

Great write up Mark. I truly think his ceiling is much higher than Allen’s or Heinicke’s. People keep screaming QB competition if he comes here. I think he would win it outright so why deprive him of first team reps?

“He could also come relatively cheaply and allow Washington to keep its first round pick and plenty of cap space, allowing the team to improve the supporting cast around him.” There’s the attraction in addition to the skill set. This is a great piece. Think of the RPO’s with Gibson. Curtis Samuel in the slot. Draft B. Jordan and run a 2-2-1... two TE’s that could block and catch. Possibilities!

Surprised you didn't mention his injury history. He's been injured ever year except for 2019 when he was benched midseason. Even this past season, he strained his pec during camp, which kept him on IR until Week 7.

His worst injury was when he broke his fibula at the end of the 2016 season. That was only his 2nd year in the league and his best season by far. However, ever since the broken fibula, his production has gone downhill and he hasn't looked the same. He returned in 2017 and his confidence seemed to be completely shattered and his pocket awareness took a nosedive as well. All the progress he'd made over the previous 2 years was gone and he reverted to his turnover-prone ways.
