Great analysis as usual Mark.

What's not to enjoy??! A rookie, with savvy, who looks like he's having fun. It takes a lot of work to leverage the moment as he did, to change the call. I think it comes out of a lot of muscle memory, and a love for the game.

I just hope he doesn't go overboard and get clobbered on some run that might have "worked" in college.

Yeah, I'm sure they've been emphasizing protecting himself more, but until we get to the regular season and he takes off running, we won't truly know. I doubt they will call any sort of real QB run scheme outside of the red zone call that was saw down on the goal line yesterday. They won't want to expose him to any hits and I would imagine in the preseason, Daniels will be more cautious and step out of bounds. The key will be in critical situations when the game is on the line. Is he willing to protect himself and the teams future, or risk it for an extra few yards in the short term?

But definitely an encouraging play from Daniels. Saw some of this type of stuff in his final year at LSU, but the checks were always to the same two or three plays. I wonder if Kilff will give him the freedom to check to other stuff too.

Thanks for providing those all-22 look, MB. End zone & EVERTHING! Nice! Lord knows I could barely make out what I was seeing via the Jets’ broadcast. That’s a play everyone is talking about today, as they should be.

I wonder if it’s got anyone wondering, “Is Daniels a rogue gunslinger who takes big chances, or a defense-reading savant who can size up the all possibilities just by looking at the oppo personal & positioning?”(A buncha BOTH, I hope😜)

Besides that play, I also loved the way he ran the offense. He seemed confident and in complete command. His crispness dictated a brisk pace, which seemed to help in their running off a bunch of good looking plays. KK obviously chose to concentrate on the ground game first and BRJ looked good filling that role. And finally, imho almost as much as that pass to Dyami was a highlight, I loved that read option TD run that culminated a vey smooth & effective drive. Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy! Hope we see a lot more of that going forward.

Definitely a lot to like about about JD5’s brief but spectacular (A PBS NEWSHour reference?!😆) debut in yesterday’s game. But now I’m gonna pollute the punch bowl by asking what the HECK happened on that first screen to Ekeler??🤪 Was it JD’s screwup - or AE30’s?.

(Man, talk about having unrealistic expectations already! 😅)

Cheers!

I don’t think he’s a rogue gunslinger. I think in normal circumstances they’d be super hyped about him doing that type of thing. I think with the injuries to both Coleman and Lucas at LT and Wylie at RT, they were nervous about him playing without any real established tackles. The game plan was clearly run the ball and maybe throw a few screens. His 2 other passes were screens and this one was originally a screen too before he checked out of it.

They probably just wanted to avoid him checking out of a screen and taking a big hit off the edge as a result. We saw how quickly the DE pressured vs Chris Paul at RT on this play and nearly got to him, so their concerns were probably justified. But in a regular season game with starting tackles in the game, they would be over the moon that he recognized this and made the check to turn what would have been a busted play into a 42-yard explosive. I think it’s just this scenario in the preseason that they would have had the hand break on and preferred him to just throw the screen, punt and get him off the field with a little bit of experience of what it’s like to get in and out of the huddle in an actual game.

The TD run was nice. He’s a cheat code in the red zone. So hard for defenses to play a QB like him down there.

Incredible accuracy to “drop it in the bucket” like that to Dyami Brown. The center and guard play is so much better than last year. It’s one pre-season game but noticeable improvement imo.
